Idle stablecoins: find money in your wallet that earns no yield
Idle stablecoins are plain, non-yield-bearing stablecoins, such as USDC, that sit in a self-custody wallet and earn no protocol yield. Signo's wallet scan adds them up chain by chain and flags them above a set amount. You can then compare recent market rates in Chat, review and sign a prepared deposit, or set an agent to alert you.
Stablecoins are easy to leave behind: a little USDC from a trade, a bridge that landed on another chain, cash you meant to move later. Plain, non-yield-bearing stablecoins held in a self-custody wallet earn no protocol yield. A Signo wallet scan shows how much of yours is sitting idle, and where.
What is an idle stablecoin?
An idle stablecoin is a plain dollar stablecoin, such as USDC or USDT, held in your wallet and not deposited anywhere. It is designed to track $1. It earns no protocol yield.
Some stablecoins already earn: savings tokens and lending receipts grow over time, so they are not idle. Non-stable assets such as ETH are not classified as idle capital.
Why it adds up
Idle cash hides because it is spread out. A few hundred dollars on Ethereum, some on Base, some on Arbitrum. Each amount looks too small to matter, but together they can be a real share of a portfolio. Lending markets and savings vaults pay a variable rate on the same coin. That yield can come from borrowers, protocol revenue, incentives or vault strategies. Leaving it idle means forgoing potential yield; whether moving it is worthwhile depends on fees and risk.
A hypothetical example
$2,000 idle × a hypothetical 4% APY = $80 a year, before fees and risk. The 4% is not a quote or a forecast. Real rates change.
How Signo helps
1. See it: the wallet scan
The wallet scan reads a wallet across the chains Signo supports and adds up its plain stablecoins, chain by chain. It flags them once they pass $1,000 or 10% of the wallet's value, whichever is lower (never below $250). It does not flag yield-bearing stablecoins. Non-stable assets such as ETH are not classified as idle capital.
2. Compare it: ask in Chat
Ask where your stablecoins could earn. Signo compares recent market rates across lending and savings markets it works with, such as Aave, Spark, Morpho, Compound and Sky, with each market's size and chain. You can ask it to show only vaults and pools that are verified or established under Signo's risk criteria.
Try this in Chat:
Compare verified and established options for my idle stablecoins3. Move it, when you decide
If you pick a market, Signo prepares the deposit from your current balance: each step, what you spend and what you receive. You review it and sign in your own wallet.
4. Keep an eye on it: two agents
An Idle capital agent tells you when the plain stablecoins in your wallets add up to more than an amount you set. A Yield rate agent watches verified or established stablecoin pools with more than $10M in deposits (TVL), and tells you when one pays more than a rate you set (5% by default). If Telegram is linked, each sends you a message there when its condition becomes true, and normally alerts once while that condition stays true.
What counts as an idle stablecoin?
Signo counts a plain stablecoin, such as USDC or USDT, that sits in a self-custody wallet and is not deposited anywhere. Yield-bearing stablecoins, such as savings tokens and lending receipts, do not count. Non-stable assets such as ETH are not classified as idle capital. The wallet scan flags idle stablecoins once they pass $1,000 or 10% of the wallet's value, whichever is lower, and never below $250.
What are the risks of earning stablecoin yield?
Earning yield adds risks that idle cash does not have, and the yield is not fixed.
- Rates move. A rate shown today is what the market paid recently, not a promise. It changes as borrowing demand, protocol revenue and incentives change.
- A deposit carries smart contract risk. Some markets can be slow to pay out when many people withdraw at once. A stablecoin can also lose its peg, whether it is idle or deposited.
- Fees can be larger than the yield. On some chains the network fee can be larger than a small deposit would earn for months.
- Verified or established is not risk-free. Risk tiers, market size and age are signals, not guarantees.
